12:45 - BIGGER BUT NOT BETTER: 

I am on my way to Washington DC to present my new book on the financial crisis. And I am going to a Washington that´s in a pretty bad - and expensive - shape after the crisis, as Brian Riedl points out:

"The public national debt - $5.8 trillion as of 2008 - is projected to double by 2012 and nearly triple by 2019. Thus, America would accumulate more government debt under President Obama than under every President in American history from George Washington to George W. Bush combined."

07:19 - THE BACKLASH AGAINST BIG GOVERNMENT: 

I end my book on the financial crisis - due to be published in the US next week - by forecasting the return of big government, but also with an expectation of a reaction against it:

"Each time people have seen the true consequences of large-scale government intervention, the spell has been broken. The longing for liberation has been reawakened. It remains to be seen how long it will take us this time to get back to the insight that the government has its limitations, and what torment our societies will have to endure in the meantime."

And now Stuart points me to a to Rasmussen study, suggesting that we are already approaching that point in time:

70% of likely American voters favour a government that offers fewer services and imposes lower taxes over one that provides more services with higher taxes. Just 19% prefer the bigger version, down five points from July and the first time it´s below 20%. Even among Democrats 48% of Democrats prefer small government while just 34% prefer bigger government.

14:53 - OM FANTASTISKA MÄN OCH FLYGANDE MASKINER: 

I Metro skriver jag om haussen kring Christer Fuglesangs rymdfärd. I dag på nätet, i morgon på papper:

"Datorer och robotar skulle kunna utföra utforskning och experiment bortom vår planet till en bråkdel av kostnaden och utan att skada utrustning eller tappa verktygslådor i rymden. ... Fuglesang och hans kolleger ska upp i rymden för att astronauter ger medieintresse, vilket ger en större budget."

10:57 - WHEN THE LEFT WERE ON THE CONSUMERS´ SIDE: 

"While others talked of free enterprise, it was the Democratic Party that acted and we ended excessive regulation in the airline and trucking industry and we restored competition to the marketplace. And I take some satisfaction that this deregulation was legislation that I sponsored and passed in the Congress of the United States."

- Ted Kennedy (1932-2009) in 1980, reminding us that deregulation is not done for the companies, but for the customers.

00:35 - AFTONBLADETAFFÄREN: NÅGON LJUGER: 

Efter den famösa artikeln om hur Israels armé stjäl unga palestiniers organ försvarade sig Aftonbladet med att artikeln inte hävdade det, utan bara refererade vad palestinska familjer berättat. Så här skriver chefredaktör Jan Helin:

"Där fanns skribenten Donald Boströms egna bild på en efterlyst palestinsk 19-årig pojke [Bilal Ahmed Ghanem] som skjutits ihjäl av israelisk militär för 17 år sedan och återlämnats till familjen uppskuren och ihopsydd från hakan till midjan. Hans familj anklagar israelerna för att ha stulit organ ur pojkens kropp efter att de dödat honom."

Men det förnekar Ghanems familj i Jerusalem Post:

"Ghanem´s younger brother, Jalal, said he could not confirm the allegations made by the Swedish newspaper that his brother´s organs had been stolen.

"I don´t know if this is true," he said. "We don´t have any evidence to support this." ...

The mother denied that she had told any foreign journalist that her son´s organs had been stolen."

10:17 - FACKETS DILEMMA: 

I Dagens Industri skriver jag om fackets medlemsras. Det beror varken på LO eller på a-kasseavgiften, för det är ett internationellt fenomen. Överallt faller anslutningsgraden, oavsett om den var hög eller låg i början. Det beror på tjänstesamhället och globaliseringen. I relativt slutna, nationella ekonomier kunde man pressa upp lönekostnaderna t ex i bilindustrin och sedan vältra över kostnaderna på kunderna:

"Den världsbilden krockade med en bensinsnål bil från Japan. Fri konkurrens över gränserna krossar monopolvinster och gör att den som vill ha bra betalt måste ge något tillbaka. Om bilen kostar 1 500 dollar mer måste kunderna tycka att den är värd 1 500 dollar mer. Annars går det löpande bandet rakt utför.

Varför tillhöra en grupp som gör dig mindre konkurrenskraftig? Och om facket inser problemet och håller nere löneökningarna, varför ska du spela med om du inte är en utbytbar kugge på en homogen arbetsplats?"

01:10 - NAOMI KLEIN NOW PRO-SHOCK: 

Ever since I read Naomi Klein´s book The Shock Doctrine I have suspected that she is not really opposed to the shock, just to the doctrine. After this statement from Klein in an article in The Progressive, it is confirmed:

"Do we want to save the pre-crisis system, get it back to where it was last September? Or do we want to use this crisis, and the electoral mandate for change delivered by the last election, to radically transform that system? We need to get clear on our answer now because we haven’t had the potent combination of a serious crisis and a clear progressive democratic mandate for change since the 1930s. We use this opportunity or we lose it."

Fits rather well with Klein´s definition of the shock doctrine, doesn´t it?

"Well, the shock doctrine, like all doctrines, is a philosophy of power. It’s a philosophy about how to achieve your political and economic goals. And this is a philosophy that holds that the best way, the best time, to push through radical ... ideas is in the aftermath of a major shock. Now, that shock could be an economic meltdown ... in that window, you can push through ... radical change"

Now it´s official: Naomi Klein has spent five years writing a book that accuses free-market liberals of thinking the way she does. As I wrote in my Cato paper The Klein Doctrine:

"Her only reason for thinking it cynical and evil when libertarians do exactly the same thing [as she does when she provides ideas on how to respond to a crisis] is that she thinks that those ideas are evil and produce horrible consequences. But that is a claim that she doesn´t provide any arguments for."

14:58 - TVÅ ANTI-TOTALITÄRA EVENT: 

Nu på söndag, den 23:e augusti, 14.00-15.00 högtidlighålls minnesdagen för nationalsocialismens och kommunismens offer på Norrmalmstorg i Stockholm, med EU-minister Cecilia Malmström som inledare. Det kan ju vara värt ett besök medan Reinfeldt minglar med Putin i Gdansk.

Och den 18:e september firar Timbro och IICC/UOK 20-årsjubiléet av kommunismens fall och Europas återförening med ett höjdarseminarium med toppgäster.

Reuters reports on a fascinating example of countercyclical spending:

"Visitors to London always have to be on the look out for pickpockets, but now there´s another, more positive phenomenon on the loose -- putpockets.

Aware that people are suffering in the economic crisis, 20 former pickpockets have turned over a new leaf and are now trawling London´s tourist sites slipping money back into unsuspecting pockets."

10:11 - PRESSFRIHET NÄR DET PASSAR: 

Som liberal är man emot att staten agerar smakdomare, oavsett vilka osmakligheter den dömer. Men så finns det också de som bara gråter krokodiltårar över pressfriheten de gånger de själva sympatiserar med det publicerade.

Missa inte Svenska Dagbladets tankeväckande ledare om Aftonbladets och Per Gahrtons dubbla måttstockar för Muhammedkarikatyrer respektive antisemitiska vandringssägner.

00:25 - ÅTMINSTONE DELVIS: 

En god vän undrar hur jag i Metro kan skriva: "Och det finns en risk att regeringen ger med sig den här gången, åtminstone delvis." Regeringen har ju tydligt sagt att den inte är beredd att pantsätta Sverige för att rädda SAAB.

Men vad regeringen envist motsätter sig är att ge tre miljarder i extra överbryggningslån, vilket är ett helt nytt krav. Det gamla SAAB-kravet på att staten ska gå i borgen för runt 4,5 miljarder i lån från Europeiska Investeringsbanken har regeringen inte alls avvisat (om affären i övrigt går i lås). Det skulle vara ett väldigt, väldigt dyrt "delvis".

14:17 - BILSTÖLD: 

I veckans Metrokrönika skriver jag om SAAB:

"På en punkt har socialdemokraterna varit glasklara om alternativet till regeringens politik. Om Mona Sahlin hade varit statsminister hade hon tagit 5 miljarder kronor från hårt arbetande svenska män och kvinnor för att ge till den amerikanska bilgiganten General Motors."

Den publiceras i papperstidningen i morgon, men finns online redan nu så att ett urval av kommentarerna kan publiceras i papperstidningen bredvid kolumnen.

14:04 - AMBASSADÖR KNÄCKER EXTRA SOM RECENSENT: 

Om någon stat hade krävt en ursäkt för publiceringar av t ex Muhammedkarikatyrer i svensk press kunde ambassaden fram till i går förklara att i Sverige har vi yttrandefrihet och det ankommer inte på landets officiella representanter att be om ursäkt för det som publiceras, även om det må vara smaklöst, kränkande eller falskt.

Efter att den svenska ambassaden i Tel Aviv har bett om ursäkt för en sjuk Aftonbladetartikel vet jag däremot inte vad de ska säga.

17:26 - I´M NOT DEAD YET: 

Jag måste bara länka till det här inlägget av Mattias Svensson. Bl a för att det omnämner mig i ett oförtjänt smickrande sammanhang, men också för att det ställer en förbaskat bra fråga om ideologiernas död

Själv tror jag ju att det är allra viktigast med ideologier och principer när alla tror att pragmatismen styr och slentriangår ned sig i statsingreppens kvicksand. För som jag själv har travesterat Mao: Man har alltid idéer: Sina egna eller någon annans.

Men när till och med SvD:s ledarsida dödförklarar ideologierna känner man sig ju lite som en karaktär ur Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

American forces are leaving Iraq. Does this mean that the mission is completed, and that the Iraqi government and the security forces are in good shape? I think this little story from The Economist is all the information you need to make up your mind:

"Last week a gang made up of members of the presidential guard and led by the head of security for the second-biggest Shia party robbed a bank, killing eight bank workers before making off with $7m. The police did not dare stop them. In the end, troops from the interior ministry did so, but only because they belonged to a rival Shia party."

14:26 - THE DANGERS OF CONFORMITY: 

A relevant and disturbing thought on why there is too much group-think and too little dissent in the world, from John Tierney in New York Times:

"Journalists, of course, are conformists too [just like academics]. So are most other professions. There’s a powerful human urge to belong inside the group, to think like the majority, to lick the boss’s shoes, and to win the group’s approval by trashing dissenters.

The strength of this urge to conform can silence even those who have good reason to think the majority is wrong. You’re an expert because all your peers recognize you as such. But if you start to get too far out of line with what your peers believe, they will look at you askance and start to withdraw the informal title of ´expert´ they have implicitly bestowed on you."

Tierney provides an interesting example. The economist Robert Shiller was concerned about the housing bubble when he was adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York up until 2004, but felt a need to be cautious:

"´In my position on the panel, I felt the need to use restraint,´ he relates. ´While I warned about the bubbles I believed were developing in the stock and housing markets, I did so very gently, and felt vulnerable expressing such quirky views. Deviating too far from consensus leaves one feeling potentially ostracized from the group, with the risk that one may be terminated.´"

12:33 - DEBUT I METRO: 

Denna vecka debuterar jag i en ny, spännande roll - som kolumnist i Sveriges största tidning, Metro.

Under det kommande året kommer jag att skriva i Metro en gång i veckan. Kolumnerna publiceras i tidningen på torsdagarna, men finns online med kommentarsfunktion redan på onsdag förmiddag (några av kommentarerna publiceras bredvid kolumnen på torsdagen).

Det är riktigt kul att på detta vis nå ut med mina idéer och tankar till potentiellt sett en och en halv miljon läsare varje vecka, och jag lär nå andra grupper än de som regelbundet läser Dagens Industri (där jag fortsätter att skriva varannan tisdag). Det känns också särskilt passande då Metro är ett av Sveriges mest framgångsrika entreprenörsprojekt.

I min första kolumn skriver jag om landshövdingen och strandskyddet, och om att det är tillfället som gör tjuven.

11:18 - BANANAS!* GOES BANANAS: 

I agree with Barbro Hedvall that suing a filmmaker is just a way of giving him publicity - which is what has happened after Dole sued Fredrik Gertten for his documentary "Bananas!*" - about possible misuse of pesticides on Nicaraguan plantations.

But is the complaint really proof that Dole´s case is "sick"? And wouldn´t it have been fair to explain why Dole is suing Gertten?

For that, we have to turn to Reuters:

"´Bananas!*´ concludes with Dominguez winning a $2.5 million punitive damages verdict on behalf of five Nicaraguan plaintiffs, but leaves out what happened next, the suit said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Victoria Chaney threw out that award and some claims, cut down other damages awarded by a jury, then threw out two of Dominguez´s pending cases.

Chaney found that medical evidence and some plaintiffs´ proof of employment had been forged. She ruled that Dominguez and others had run a large-scale operation to recruit men who had never worked on Dole plantations to act as plaintiffs and had coached them in how to testify."

16:00 - TAX FACT OF THE DAY: 

In 2007, before Barack Obama had started to "spread the wealth around", the top 1% of tax filers in the US paid more in individual income taxes than the bottom 95%.

02:06 - HANDS OFF VENEZUELA, HUGO!: 

Venezuelas allt mer diktatoriske president Hugo Chávez stängde nyss 32 oppositionella radiostationer och två TV-stationer. Samtidigt vill han driva igenom en lag som gör det möjligt att kasta kritiska journalister i fängelse.

Nu väntar vi bara på att få se om dessa 17 svenska vänsterprofiler, SSU:are och vänsterpartister återigen ska skriva ett upprop till stöd för Chávez och kalla angreppet på medierna ett steg i demokratisk riktning. Som de skrev för två år sedan: 

"Vi anser att det avgörande problemet i Venezuela är att ett litet fåtal mångmiljonärer kontrollerar den överväldigande delen av massmedia... Fortfarande domineras medialandskapet i Venezuela kraftigt av en stark kritik mot regeringen, medan den stora majoritet av befolkningen som stödjer Hugo Chávez har svårare att göra sig hörd."

01:08 - THE SUPERSTITIOUS MARKET: 

Here is an interesting problem for all believers in the neo-classical efficient market hypothesis: Research shows that around the date of an eclipse US stock markets produced below-average results, and the returns grew worse in proportion to the size of the eclipse and the media coverage it attracted.

And the paper also contains some support for the more Austrian perspective that the market is a never ending process of trials-and-(stupid-and-bizarre)-errors. On the days after the eclipse the market recovered quickly as other traders spotted the irrationality of the superstitious.
