17:45 - BACK IN BUSINESS, SORT OF: I'm sorry about the temporary interruption. This website has been under attack, and I had to take it down until the problem was solved. Since there has been a lot of speculation about political motives on different blogs, I want to point out that absolutely nothing points to that. This sort of attack is often launched against websites that have weaknesses, regardless of what they are about. For some time it will be more difficult for me to update the blog, so don't sit up waiting.

04:28 - THE HYPOCRITES OBAMA AND CLINTON: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are putting on a good show when they claim to be fighting for the poor and against the big corporations. But it is just a show. Nothing but smoke and mirrors. We know, because the both Sentors yesterday voted to override the president´s veto on the new farm bill.
So now when American farmers profit from the highest food prices in a generation, they get another $307 billion dollar in subsidies over the next five years - most of it to the large agribusinesses. (Around 80 percent of the money go to the 20 percent richest.)
The next time Obama or Clinton give a fancy speech about people vs profits, remember that they create more misery and poverty in poor countries, ruin the hopes for freer trade in the Doha Round and hurt American taxpayers when they suffer the most from a bad economy and rising prices, just because the two candidates find it in their interest to give billions to the richest.
(John McCain opposed the evil bill, unlike most Republicans. The Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell even got subsidies for the racehorse industry in his native Kentucky into the bill.)

22:10 - 635 MILLION FEWER CHINESE POOR SINCE 1981: Some time ago, the World Bank revised estimates of the purchasing power of the Chinese currency downwards, and since then many of us have been waiting to see how this would increase the measure of the number of extremely poor in China. In Aftonbladet Mikael Nyberg claimed that it proved that I was wrong when I wrote a report (pdf) that mentioned the dramatic poverty reduction in China. I answered that the change means that there are more poor Chinese than we previously thought, but that there were more before as well, so that the reduction has been just as big.
I was wrong. The reduction in poverty is not as big as we thought. It is bigger.
The World Bank used to think that 634 million Chinese were in extreme poverty in 1981 and 128 million in 2004. In a new paper that The Economist brings attention to, numbers are revised for the new PPP-data and the new numbers are 839 million and 287 million respectively, and a year later, in 2005, it was 204 million. We thought that 506 million Chinese had escaped poverty, but it seems like 635 million did.
Will Nyberg and Aftonbladet write about these dramatic results or is poverty statistics only interesting when it seemed to show less progress than we thought?
In my report I also speculated that the dramatic reduction in poverty will probably get the World Bank to increase its poverty line. Otherwise they won´t have much to measure a few decades from now. I have already been proven right. Another World Bank paper suggests that we change a dollar a day to $1.25 a day. Well, take your pick and stick to it, and progress is the same.

06:33 - DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN: Den 9 september 2006 skrev jag i Expressen om hur Citys chefredaktör Mikael Nestius bad sina läsare om ursäkt i kolumnisten Sakine Madons namn utan att fråga henne. Nyligen gjorde han en ny tabbe och försöker samtidigt skriva om den gamla historien. Sakines version är värd att läsa och inte bara för att den innehåller Nestius obetalbara svar på hennes fråga vad han själv tyckte om hennes krönika om Atatürk.
UPPDATERING 13.54: Sakine Madon synar Nestius genom att offentliggöra deras mailväxling som bevisar att hans påståenden är falska.
05:21 - LESS TERRORISM AND A MORE PEACEFUL AFRICA: When did you see that headline in the papers the last time? A new Human Security Brief (pdf) has been published, and once again it presents counterintuitive findings:
- Excluding Iraq, there has been a reduction in global fatalities from terrorism since 2001 of more than 40 percent.
- The number of conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa more than halved 1999-2006 and the combat toll dropped by 98 percent.
- There has not been a reversal in the general decline in armed conflicts and combat deaths that we have seen since the end of the cold war.

06:05 - DEBATT OM KRITIKEN: Jag har som sagt var inte haft tid att läsa Ankarloos rapport ännu, så jag får återkomma till den. Andra tycker emellertid till: Anders Emretsson går rätt på värderingsfrågan och menar att Ankarloo har en poäng, medan Jacob Lundberg i en ambitiös bloggpost förklarar varför han tycker att Ankarloo har fel.

04:40 - JAG FÅR PÅ MOPPE: När ETC:s Johan Ehrenberg för ett halvår sedan skulle opponera på min Globaliseringsrådsrapport Världens välfärd (pdf) hade han nästan inga invändningar mot innehållet. Tvärtom sade han att det var gamla insikter som Marx hade kunnat hålla med om. Men via Andreas Bergh ser jag att ETC i efterhand har låtit publicera en längre kritik av min rapport, författad av Daniel Ankarloo, en av få nu levande svenskar som vill avskaffa både äganderätten och lönearbetet.
Det är kul och välkommet. Jag har inte hunnit läsa rapporten (pdf) ännu eftersom jag reser runt i USA på en liten skolturné, men den tycks mest handla om en enda sak - en traditionell kritik mot köpkraftsjustering i samband med fattigdomsmått. Bland det lilla jag har hunnit se är Ankarloos slutsats att jag antingen är okunnig eller en charlatan, samt att han slår fast att rapporten trots titeln knappt innehåller ett enda mått på välfärd, bara på pengar och välstånd (sid 35). Detta säger han alltså om en rapport som bl a studerar medellivslängd, barn- och mödradödlighet, sjukdomar, psykisk hälsa, vatten och sanitet, undernäring, fertilitet, utbildning, barnarbete, kvinnors rättigheter, boendemiljö, miljö, naturkatastrofer, krig, terrorism och våldsbrott.
Om jag var lite mer ideologiskt uppjagad skulle jag säga att Ankarloos missvisande beskrivning väcker frågan om han är okunnig eller en charlatan.

On every single page there are new insights and fascinating pieces of information that forces you to read it with pencil in hand. Like this:

The move to ´crooked shoes,´ combined with the mass-production techniques, brought comfortable, inexpensive footwear first to the working classes and then up the socioeconomic scale."

08:46 - GOING WEST: I just took my last cappuccino in Stockholm for one and a halft month, and I might blog a bit less frequently in the coming weeks. I am heading for New York, Pennsylvania and Washington DC for different lectures and projects and won´t be back until everybody has left Stockholm for vacation.
It is the US, and it´s an election year. Some things like this and this must be expected.

10:29 - PROTECTIONIST US HEALTH CARE: The cost of a standard health insurance plan for a healthy 25-year old man in New Jersey is $5,580 a year, partly because the state makes 40 benefits mandatory, incluing in-vitro fertilization, Michael Tanner points out. A standard insurance plan in Kentucky would cost him only $960 - but he can´t, because it is illegal for him to buy a plan from another state.
This is just like any other sort of protectionism and we shouldn´t be surprised that the result is the same: A lack of competition, higher costs and less quality.

12:03 - AFTONBLADET UPPFINNER 2,7 MILJONER NY-BOR: Man inser snabbt att något är konstigt med Aftonbladets nyhet att "Matkrisen har nått New York" och att Reuters ska ha angivit att 4 miljoner New York-bor är beroende av soppkök. Den första förklaringen till de stigande matpriserna som artikeln anger är nämligen "lägre produktion inom jordbruket", trots att förra årets globala skörd var den största i världshistorien och årets skörd kommer att bli ännu större.
Lite begripligare blir det när man inser att det inte finns någon Reutersartikel som tydligt dokumenterar och belägger uppgifterna, det är i stället från denna knappt en minut och 44 sekunder långa film som AB-skribenterna har hämtat all sin information.
Men inte heller där finns påståendet om fyra miljoner vid soppköken. De senaste officiella uppgifterna jag hittar, från i oktober, talar om att 1,3 miljoner New York-bor utnyttjar någon typ av matstöd. Redan det är förfärande många och det lär ha ökat till i dag, men siffran 4 miljoner är och förblir Aftonbladets eget påhitt - liksom innovationen att översätta "39 billion" till "39 miljoner" är det...
UPPDATERING 14.57: Gunilla Kinn skriver mer och noterar att det blir så här när man ersätter kunskap på marken med googlare vid Globen och Marieberg.
Aftonbladet erkänner implicit misstaget. Efter att ha toppat med artikeln ackompanjerad med två bilder i morse har de nu helt tagit bort den från förstasidan.
UPPDATERING 16.21: Och nu har Aftonbladet tagit bort påståendet om 4 miljoner ur artikeln. Bravo, då är det bara två grova fel kvar i artikeln. Eller tre, för tydligen citerar de fel också.

12:49 - TILL FRU GÅRMANS FÖRSVAR: 
Sällan har väl en idé blivit så enhälligt utskåpad som Vägverkets projekt att komplettera Herr Gårman med Fru Gårman. Så jag kan inte motstå tillfället att bli till allas åtlöje för lång tid framöver: Jag tycker att det är en rätt bra idé.
Att låta människan i allmänhet och i vardagen symboliseras av en kvinna är ett effektivt sätt att utmana vår traditionella föreställning att mannen alltid är utgångspunkten, att det är normen, och att det behövs ett särskilt skäl till att använda kvinnlig symbolik. (Sen kan man ju ställa sig frågan om en kjol är bästa symbolen för en kvinna. Vi får se.)
Visst är det bara symbolik, men symbolik är inte så bara när det är just mentala bilder som sätter gränser för vad vi anser naturligt och korrekt. Men dessutom är symbolförändringar inte frihetsinskränkande, vilket lagstiftning på området nästan alltid är. Som jämställdhetspolitik betraktat är det förbluffande liberalt:
- En ny skylt inskränker inte valfriheten, vilket kvoterad föräldraledighet gör.
- Den inskränker inte äganderätten, vilket statskvoterade styrelser gör.
- Den kostar inte mängder av skattemedel, vilket jämställdhetsbonusar o dyl gör.
- Den gör inte anspråk på att det finns ett visst rätt sätt att leva på, vilket nästan all jämställdhetspolitik annars handlar om.
Emot detta ska vägas att vi går miste om en finurlig ordlek. Jag kan leva med det.

23:05 - KREATIV FÖRSTÖRELSE: Via Mattias Svensson hittar jag ett fantastiskt snyftreportage från Rapport 1979, om hur discoteken dödar dansbanden och Musikerförbundet svarar med krav om discoteksavgift och indraget alkoholtillstånd för etablissemang utan levande musik.
Det sedelärande är förstås hur perspektivet alltid är hur man ska ge det gamla konstgjord andning i stället för att se potentialen i det nya. Discoteksägaren som intervjuas är Sydney Onayemi. I inslaget framstår han bara som en glädjeförstörare, men med facit i hand vet vi att han nästan på egen hand skapade den svenska DJ-kulturen och 80-talets new romantic-stil genom trendsättande klubbar som 1984, som nyligen skildrades kärleksfullt av Johan Kinde i underbart bitterljuva romanen Någon sorts extas.
Sydney, som häromdagen intervjuades i Stil, står naturligtvis för den bästa repliken i det nästan 30 år gamla Rapportinslaget:
"De spelar sån där samhällskritisk musik som människor inte kan dansa till. Det får de gärna spela, men då får de räkna med att bli arbetslösa också.”
22:19 - LÖN FÖR MÖDAN: I Godmorgon, världen! i dag var jag med och bedömde vilka yrkesgrupper som ska ha vilka löner, om vi bortser från tillgång och efterfrågan. Min främsta invändning är att vi inte ska ha löner efter yrkeskategorier. Ska inte en riktigt bra svetsare/sjuksköterska/lärare ha mycket bättre betalt än i dag och en riktigt dålig betydligt mindre än i dag?
Under alla omständigheter var det ett intressant experiment. Men själv tyckte jag att vi utklassades av Public Service som lät ÖB få hjälp av Lyxfällan...

17:54 - I´LL DRINK TO THAT: Some of us absinthe fans have said it for a long time, but now it has been proven scientifically, reports Financial Times: That the chemical thujone (from wormwood) is especially psychedelic was just a myth spread out by the wine industry since it wanted to ban a competitor. There is a simple explanation for the stories about hallucinations and creative insanity: 70% pure alcohol has that effect if you don´t know your limits.
A scientist in Karlsruhe apparently found 13 bottles of pre-ban absinthe to run his tests.
Lucky man.
10:10 - LOST IN TRANSLATION: En stor del av världen envisas med att fortsätta tala ett annat språk en svenska, vilket ger vissa av våra medier en del huvudbry. I samband med primärvalet där skrev TT om "det sandiga Ohio". Sandiga? Tja, "gritty Ohio", var det ju, vilket betyder att delstaten är lite ruffig och nedgången. Men bokstavligen betyder gritty enligt ordboken "grusig, sandig, grynig"...
Och häromdagen uppmärksammade min vän Kristian mig på ett annat exempel. TT översatte en artikel där Obamas tidigare pastor Jeremiah Wright klagade över "corporate-owned media", vilket de översatte till "korporativt ägda medier". Jag skulle nog säga att det är mindre farligt att svenskarna tror att Ohio är en ökendelstat än att de (inklusive våra journalister) inte förstår skillnaden mellan privatägda företag och korporativism.
