14:50 - NU BLIR DET LITE MER MÅNGFALD: I morgon är det dags för en ny Bloggkrönika i Lunchekot. Mitt stalltips är att de för första gången citerar en icke-vänsterbloggare, förmodligen ett par stycken. Det har helt enkelt blivit för pinsamt för dem att totalt ignorera alla hundratals liberala bloggare i landet, av vilka högst ett par procent liksom jag är "proffstyckare" av det slag de velat undvika. Nu måste de antyda någon slags mångfald för att inte bli till ett stående skämt i bloggosfären.
Men att Bloggkrönikan nu skärper sig kan inget någonsin förändra att den under sina första tre veckor citerade 8 politiska bloggare och av dem var samtliga 8 vänster. Vad säger det om Ekots världsbild?

On his blog, Roland Poirier Martinsson, one of Sweden´s leading conservative intellectual, develops his thoughts on why he considers me his main opponent in Swedish politics. He thinks that socialism is dead, and apart from conservatism only social liberalism and classical liberalism/libertarianism remain as living ideologies. And of those he thinks that the latter is the strongest and the furthest from his own traditionalist ideas.
It´s not such a bad analysis. When I get the time, I will develop my own thoughts about this. Until then, I recommend the best essay on the subject.

Yes, both nations still have millions living in poverty. But they are on the move. Or look at Vietnam or Thailand. Then wait for the South Americans, and in time, with our help, the Africans.

The new world rewards those who are open to it.
Foreign investment improves our economy.
Or take immigration.
We know we need strict controls. They are being put in place, along with Identity Cards, also necessary in a changing world.
But one of the most satisfying things about the election was that the country saw through the Tories nasty, unprincipled campaign on immigration. People who come to work and make their lives here make Britain not weaker but stronger.
But there is a lesson here too.
The temptation is to use Government to try to protect ourselves against the onslaught of globalisation by shutting it out; to think we protect a workforce by regulation; a company by Government subsidy; an industry by tariffs.
It doesn’t work today.
Because the dam holding back the global economy burst years ago.
The competition can’t be shut out, it can only be beaten."

23:36 - DAGENS FRIA TELEVISION: Vad är det som är så roligt med denna text ur VD Christina Jutterströms senaste veckobrev till personalen på SVT? (Svaret återfinns efter citatet.)
"I fredags samlades åter SVT:s 100-grupp, alltså de drygt 100 högsta cheferna på företaget. Jag hade bjudit in kultur- och utbildningsminister Leif Pagrotsky för att få hans syn på SVT, public service och andra mediefrågor. Vi fick beröm för att vi är ett starkt och livskraftigt företag med stor betydelse i landet. Ministern lovade också att så långt som möjligt följa ps-utredningarnas inriktning att ge oss en större frihet med mindre detaljreglering i det nya tillståndet, som han vill ska sträcka sig långt fram i tiden för att säkra public service för framtiden. Pagrotsky efterlyste SVT:s utbud i mobilen där redan de kommersiella kanalerna finns. SVTi-chefen Lena Glaser svarade att SVT kommer att finnas i mobilerna under oktober. Vi fick också frågan om vi, i likhet med den svenska musikindustrin, inte borde kunna öka försäljningen utomlands av program och programformat. a) Den fria televisionens VD gläds åt "större frihet" samtidigt som hon redogör för de senaste diktaten från regeringen, och hur de ska hörsammas.
b) De av oss som inte riktigt har begripit storleken på kolossen SVT kan sluta undra. Det finns alltså en 100-grupp som inte samlar de 100 cheferna, vilket hade varit mycket nog, utan de 100 högsta cheferna...

19:59 - RÄTTSVIDRIGT MAKTMISSBRUK:
Var är Bosse Ringholm när man behöver honom? Det framgick just i Rapport att polisen i Jönköping är kompletta idioter.
Idag har de systematiskt stoppat utländska lastbilar på vägarna, men inte bara för att kontrollera trafiksäkerheten. De gjorde det i sällskap med fackförbundet Transport, som på så vis fick uppgifter om transportföretagen som de annars inte kan få fram på legal väg. Detta berättade Transports representant att de använde till att tvinga på dem kollektivavtal eller förbereda blockader som tvingar ut dem ur landet.
Att polisen utnyttjar sin tvångsmakt för att berika privata maktintressen trodde jag var något som bara skedde i poliskårer som korrumperats av maffian. Det enda som var mer anmärkningsvärt var att Rapport inte ställde en enda kritisk fråga om maktmissbruket, utan framställde det som en ovanlig, men spännande happening i trafikvimlet.

18:08 - DAGENS VAD VAR DET JAG SA?: "Usch, jag hatar att få rätt. Ekots bloggkrönika har verkligen fortsatt i tangentens riktning. Första gången var det som sagt ett angrepp på hela den amerikanska civilisationen, andra krönikan blev en diskussion mellan olika vänsterfeminister om FI, och idag var det först ett citat av en av de Michael Moore-diggande vänsterbloggarna, sen var det två socialistbloggare som spydde galla över att Skype-Niklas Zennström tycker att svenskar jobbar för lite, och avslutningsvis Mr Brown som säger att nyliberaler och ekonomer föraktar mindre lyckligt lottade i Tyskland.
Bloggvärlden utmärker sig genom att vara mer liberal och mer höger än kulturdebatten i övrigt. Men Ekots bloggkrönika har sektledarens mentalitet. Den lyfter upp och klappar mindre kolleger på huvudet under förutsättning att de har samma världsåskådning och samma analys som kulturvänstern. Enfald - inte mångfald. Börjar inte någon på Ekot eller Sveriges Radio tycka att det är lite pinsamt?"

16:12 - JAG OM ELMBRANT: I fredags debatterade jag med Björn Elmbrant om hans nya bok om IT-bubblan, Dansen kring guldkalven, på ABF-Stockholm. Jag menade att bubblan inte var ett argument mot liberala teorier av två skäl: 1) Marknaden är en upptäcktsfärd. Det är alltid lätt att vara efterklok, men beslut måste fattas med den kunskap vi har då. Och därför måste vi också ha misslyckanden i en dynamisk ekonomi. Elmbrant skriver: "Med facit i hand inser vi att kanske en tiondel eller en tjugondel hade varit tillräckligt. Så få bärkraftiga affärsidéer fanns det." (sid 296) Ja, så kanske det var. Men hur vet man vilken tiondel eller tjugondel som är tillräcklig innan man har facit i hand? 2) Det räcker inte att visa att marknadsaktörer misslyckas för att visa att marknaden bör begränsas. Man måste också visa att politiker och reglerare hade fattat fiffigare beslut. Men tvärtom var det just politiker som drogs med allra mest av bubblan: Telia delprivatiserades, PPM instiftades, AP-fonderna började investera mer i aktier och Alan Greenspan tryckte som mest pengar precis när bubblan var som störst. 10:55 - HOW TARIFFS INITIATED THE 1929 CRASH:
Jude Wanniski, the man who coined the term "supply-side economics", died of a heart attack last month. In a forthcoming article in The American Conservative, Jon Basil Utley writes that Wanniski was the first to see that the Smoot-Hawley tariff not only deepened and exported the great depression of the 1930s (world trade declined by two thirds 1929-1934), it also initiated the crash. Since the confiscatory tariff was passed after the crash economists had not seen the connection, but Wanniski showed that the crash started the day after the anti-tariff coalition broke apart. Here is an excerpt from Wanniski:
"The following Monday morning´s Times [October 28, 1929] provides the hardest news yet that the anti-tariff coalition had broken and the pro-tariff coalition was in control.
Not only did Senator Smoot predict the bill would survive. So did Senator Borah, until then leader of the anti-tariff forces, saying he thought ´it is going to be made into a good bill.´ Worse yet, Democratic leader Simmons said the Democrats would do nothing to kill the bill, that the Republicans would have to take full responsibility. In the day´s trading, the DJI dropped 38 points in what the Times called a ´Nation-wide Stampede to Unload.´
The following day, Black Tuesday, the industrials fall 30 points more, to 230... On June 13, the Senate approves by two votes the measure to increase tariffs on more than 1,000 items and sends the bill to Hoover. On this news, the stock market breaks 14 points to 230, precisely where it was on the bottom on Black Tuesday, October 29. Hoover signs the bill and stocks tumble again. The market slide does not end until Franklin Roosevelt, a tariff foe, is nominated by the Democrats in 1932."

Nu är det många som förbereder sig på att Persson lämnar politiken. Nuder sätter hustrun på ett friår, kanske för att få hjälp med markservicen vid ett maktövertagande, och Ringholm tycks anstränga sig för att snabbt få en reträttpost innan alla andra statsråd också blir konkurrenter om landshövdingeposterna.
Men detta påverkar media också. Politiske reportern Erik Fichtelius, som sattes i karantän på grund av sitt intervjuprojekt med Persson, kan snart rehabiliteras. Och SVT håller redan på att förbereda hans storstilade comeback med sitt öppna arkiv, där Fichtelius genombrott just har lagts ut. Efterlängtat för alla oss som har saknat honom:

Here you can listen and read when the Swedish vice prime minister, Bosse Ringholm, says that the Swedish police are "damned lazy", "don´t do anything", and that one particular policeman is "an idiot". Everything said to a colleague after a phone interview where he said that the police do a good work - and he forgot to hang up.
It´s good that Ringholm finally admits that the Swedish police system doesn´t work. Sad, though that the crime that upsets him is not murder or burglary (which he also says that the police don´t care about), but illegal gambling machines. Why? Because the social democrats are financed by the Swedish gambling monopoly.

PJ Anders Linder thinks that I should be more patient when it comes to German reforms. Transitions take time. After all, Thatcher begun in 1979, and much still remains to be done in Britain. I agree, that´s a good point. But we must also remember that it is not reforms just because it happens to take time.

20:35 - KATRINA: THE CASE FOR MARKETS AND A STRONG CIVIL SOCIETY:
Some have said that the disaster in New Orleans proves the need for big government. In Washington Post, Anne Applebaum thinks the opposite conclusion is more logical:
”But while it is true that the government´s relief effort looks set to dwarf anything it has tried before, consider what the actual experience of the disaster has already been – not theoretically, not on paper, but in practice. Listen, for example, to volunteers who prepared 92 boats to help evacuate people from the rooftops of New Orleans. They were ultimately kept out by Federal Emergency Management Agency bureaucrats because, among other things, they didn´t have life preservers. Or listen to the volunteers who organized 100 doctors to treat 400 sick people at a converted Baton Rouge warehouse – until they, too, were told by the government to shut down, reopen and then shut down again. Or to the hundreds of firefighters who, according to the New York Times, responded to a nationwide call for help and were then ‘held by the federal agency in Atlanta for days of training on community relations and sexual harassment,’ while women were raped and lives were lost in New Orleans.
…the worst failures of the past two weeks have been big-government failures. The biggest successes, by contrast, have come out of this country´s incredibly vibrant, amazingly diverse and fantastically generous civil society. Sooner or later, it will be impossible not to draw political lessons from that paradox.”
In New York Times, John Tierny has an explanation for this paradox:
”While Louisiana officials debated how to accept outside help, Acadian [a private ambulance company] was directing rescues by helicopters from the military and other states. When the Federal Emergency Management Agency´s paperwork slowed the evacuation of patients from the airport, Acadian´s frustrated medics waited with empty helicopters.
The company sent in outside doctors and nurses to the airport, where patients were dying and medical care was in short supply. FEMA rejected the help because the doctors and nurses weren´t certified members of a National Disaster Medical Team.
President Bush has promised to find out what went wrong and make sure the government has a better plan for the next disaster. But plans can do only so much. As the Acadian workers demonstrated, coping with a disaster requires the ability to improvise and break the rules - talents notably absent in most bureaucrats.”
And Thomas Sowell has another explanation:
”Well before Katrina reached New Orleans, when it was still just a tropical depression off the coast of Florida, Wal-Mart was rushing electric generators, bottled water, and other emergency supplies to its distribution centers along the Gulf coast.
Nor was Wal-Mart unique. Federal Express rushed 100 tons of supplies into the stricken area after Katrina hit. State Farm Insurance sent in a couple of thousand special agents to expedite disaster claims. Other businesses scrambled to get their goods or services into the area.
Meanwhile, laws prevent the federal government from coming in without the permission or a request from state or local authorities... The desire to make money usually gets people in gear faster than the desire to help others.”
16:29 - THE MONEY STAYS IN THE FAMILY:
This is difficult to explain for you non-Swedes, but under the influence of the green party, the social democratic government in Sweden has introduced the "free year" - a system that gives an employee the right to take one year off from work on 70% of the income, if the employer can find someone unemployed who can do his or her job during that time.
For a long time I have wondered why for example the finance minister Pär Nuder thinks that tax-funding long-term vacationing is the way to compete in a global economy. Today I read that Nuder´s wife, a journalist on the daily Dagens Nyheter, has taken a free year...
16:21 - FÖRTYDLIGANDE AV RÄTTELSE:
Flera personer har mailat mig och undrat över min förståelse för manshatarsången på FI:s möte. Därför vill jag förtydliga att det jag förstår är kompisens avsky och att hon uttrycker den, och jag tycker att det är felaktigt och orättvist mot henne att media har lyft den ur sitt sammanhang.
Däremot har jag ingen som helst förståelse över att FI låter en sådan sång framföras på partimötet. Då använder de ett privat hämndbegär som en drivkraft till sin ideologi. Och att basera ideologier på hat mot andra grupper brukar inte leda till en bättre värld.

08:17 - AN END TO REFORM?:
In the early 1990s the former communist states envied East Germany. All of these countries had to go through difficult reforms, whereas East Germany could import enormous subsidies, social legislation and higher wages from West Germany. But importing high costs without first having the productivity to pay for it is not something to envy. Today, almost all of these countries are making rapid progress, except Eastern Germany, which is stuck in massive unemployment and stagnation. And yesterday a quarter of its population voted for the post-communists.
The unemployment rate in Germany is about 12 percent and growth is nowhere to be seen. And despite the welcome gain for the liberal FDP (9.8% +2.4), Germany voted against reforms to change this. This raises the awkward question if there is a certain stage where dependency on the government has gone so far and a change seem so far off that the electorate becomes more interested in defending good terms for unemployment than in creating opportunities for growth and jobs. In that case, sclerosis creates a public demand for even more stagnation. And when that happens, politicians won´t heistate to meet that demand.
This is not just a German problem. Western Europe is right now a laboratory experiment where we study how far the welfare/dirigiste state can go. We are the guinea-pigs.

17:30 - VOUCHERS TO MUSLIM SCHOOLS:
Godmorgon, världen! this morning raised the important question about fundamentalist ideas that are taught in several Muslim schools in Sweden. Some of them even receive funding (and therefore ideas) from Wahabbist circles in Saudi Arabia. Because of this risk, the social democrat Nalin Pekgul demand that Muslim schools are forced out of the Swedish school voucher system.
I understand her concern. But is the best way of minimising this risk really to cut them off from Swedish sources of funding, and therefore make them completely dependent on the fundamentalists? Wouldn´t it be better to stop them from receiving funds from them instead?

My In Defence will soon be published in an Australian edition, and in a couple of weeks I will go there to present this year´s John Bonython Lecture at The Centre for Independent Studies. The Australian magazine Policy has published my critical examination of wellbeing research, and the link between wealth and happiness - right now highlighted on Arts & Letters Daily. This is a theme I develop further in my forthcoming book.
There is also a nice feature of me in the leading daily The Australian today. I especially like this hopeful conclusion:

Jag kände inte till bakgrunden till den feministiska sången om att slita män i stycken som jag länkade till. Nu har det påpekats för mig (tack Andreas) att tjejen i mitten berättade att denna skrevs med anledning av att en kompis till henne blivit våldtagen, och när hon hjälplös låg och skrek efter hjälp blev hon våldtagen av en annan man. Och med kunskap om detta har jag full förståelse för det avsky som sången uttryckte.
Det visar sannerligen hur förvrängd vår uppfattning (i detta sammanhang: min) blir när vi inte känner till kontexten, utan bara ser korta utdrag ryckta ur sitt sammanhang.
Här finns förresten en NYT-artikel som - om den stämmer, det verkar finnas delade meningar - visar att det kan finnas fel i den Bergströmartikel om orkanen som jag länkade till här. (Tack Henrik)

Something interesting happens every time I write something about George W Bush:
When I criticise Bush (for example for his position on gay rights, intelligent design, steel tariffs, increased public spending, the deficit, the Patriot Act or Guantanamo), I receive emails from people asking me "Why do you always attack President Bush, don´t you understand that even though he is not perfect, he is much more in favour of free trade, free markets and limited government than the Democrats?".
When I write something nice about Bush (for example his view on social security reform, tort reform, school vouchers, that he is more free trade than the Democrats and the fact that he might put an end to the American tradition of supporting "friendly" despots in the Middle East), I receive emails from people asking me: "Why do you always defend President Bush, don´t you understand that he is a bigotted big government conservative, opposed to gays, abortion and the separation of church and state?
I never receive reactions like that when I write about other political leaders. It seems like many´s world revolves around Bush - "you are either with him or you´re with those who oppose him", to paraphrase an American president.
Well, my world doesn´t. I support Bush (or anyone else) when he does good things, and oppose him when he does bad things. I am sorry if that confuses some of my readers... ;-)

But they failed, and so the borders have been open to those who want to profit from our social security system. Det och vissa andra undantag hindrade ju inte att den allmänna bilden blev helt fel, men det ger i alla fall hopp om journalistiken...
11:22 - RUMMEL STRIKES BACK:
Rudolph Rummel has written an interesting response to the report I just wrote about, suggesting it is based on a simple mistake. (Thanks Peder) Here is an excerpt:
"...the correlation between economic freedom and democracy is high. In fact, they form a common dimension among nations with many other human security and economic variables, and with which democraticy is correlated...
If two independent variables are highly correlated they are no longer statistically independent, and the first one entered into the regression, in this case economic freedom, steals that part of the correlation it has with democracy from the dependent variable. Thus, economic freedom is highly significant, while democracy is not. If Gartzke had done two bivariate regressions on his MID data, one with economic freedom and other with democracy as the independent variables, he surely would have found democracy highly significant."
Personally I suggest a peace precautionary principle: Introduce both democracy and free markets, and then you should be on the safe side.

With his impressive research, Rudolph Rummel has showed that democracies don´t go to war with democracies. But Economic Freedom of the World 2005, now released, reveals an even stronger correlation between free markets and peace:
"When measures of both economic freedom and democracy are included in a statistical study, economic freedom is about 50 times more effective than democracy in diminishing violent conflict. The impact of economic freedom on whether states fight or have a military dispute is highly significant, while democracy is not a statistically significant predictor of conflict.
Nations with a low score for economic freedom (below 2 out of 10) are 14 times more prone to conflict than states with a high score (over 8). The overall pattern of results does not shift when additional variables, such as membership in the European Union, nuclear capability, and regional factors, are added."

Det är i alla fall en gnutta mediehistoria som skrivs när Lunchekot i dag för första gången kompletterar den dagliga tidningskrönikan med en bloggkrönika varje lördag. Och omedelbart ger det upphov till en diskussion bland bloggare om vad man ska skriva för att få bli citerad...
Förmodligen kommer många att undra varför pyjamasklädda åsiktsexhibitionister med en dator ska tas på nästan lika stort allvar som anrika dagstidningar. Det beror på den sjuka som Marshall McLuhan identifierade: Vi ser nya medieformer som nya, sämre varianter av de gamla, och därför utfaller jämförelsen oftast till de nyas nackdel. Därför ska man alltid göra tankeexperimentet att vända på ordningsföljden. Vad hade man sagt om dagstidningarna om de började utvecklas först i dag, medan bloggarna hade etablerats redan under tidigt 1800-tal?
Troligen hade man då sagt att tidningarna är outhärdligt långsamma och att frånvaron av interaktivitet och ständigt relaterande till andras åsikter och idéer skapar en torftig envägskommunikation och minskar mängden kunskap som används och förmedlas. Och eftersom tidningarna använder siffror och uppgifter utan att länka till källorna för detta omöjliggör det för läsaren att självständigt bedöma deras tillförlitlighet. Sist men inte minst hade man tyckt att en medieform som förutsätter att man har enorma ekonomiska resurser och tillgång till tryckpress och nationell utbärning var ett hot mot yttrandefriheten.
Kort sagt hade ingen kunnat begripa varför Lunchekot skulle komplettera sin dagliga bloggkrönika med en tidningskrönika på lördagarna...

Here is an intelligent and interesting challenge to my hope that the presidential election in Egypt gives the Egyptian people more appetite for democracy:
"I am not sure that Egypt ´pluralist´ election is a step forward, or at least, one has to decide on in what sense it would be.
I have worked as an (short-time) observer in several elections (Ukraine 1999, Georgia 2002, Togo 2002), each of which was a ´spoof election´ - especially Togo - and apparently still more transparent and regular than the one that took place in Egypt. Among those, the only useful election was the one in Georgia, which led to the demise of Chevardnadze, but only after the people took to the street. Ukraine (then) and Togo (untill Eyadema´s recent death) took to business as usual, only with a democratic façade.
What basically happened in Georgia is that the regime was not sure that it could fire on demonstrators. It was not clear that the security forces were on its side and the US were counterbalancing Russia´s protection, so Chevardnadze could not just rely on force (and maybe he didn´t want to anyway).
I don´t think anything is going to change in Egypt because the alternative to Mubarak and his nasserite panarabist party is, or is perceived to be by most Western countries, islamism. So, most probably, Europe, Arab countries, Israel, and probably the US too, would let Mubarak do what it takes to keep his country ´stable´. And the most likely is that nothing of the sort will happen anyway.
On the other hand, this election has attracted many people´s attention on Egyptian authoritarianism. People usually pay more attention to dubious elections than to no elections at all, so it is not always a good calculus for an authoritarian regime to organise spoof elections." - Jean
10:15 - HEJA FI:
Feministiskt Initiativ vill avskaffa äktenskapet, och ersätta det med en samlevnadsbalk som möjliggör samma legala status som äktenskapet, men för två eller flera personer, oavsett kön. För detta kommer de nu att hånas av borgerliga debattörer och tidningar. Men tvärtom borde de stödjas.
I grunden handlar det om avtalsfrihet och om att ingen ska hindras från att ingå frivilliga relationer. Staten ska vara neutral, och sedan ska organisationer och kyrkor ha rätt att ha sina egna traditioner och förbehåll för att välsigna någras samlevnad. Det är en logisk följd av den fördröjda separationen mellan kyrkan och stat.
De flesta andra Fi-krav handlar om privilegier, kvotering och andra former av olikhet inför lagen. I denna fråga har de för en gångs skull gjort precis vad en feministisk rörelse bör göra - bekämpa diskriminering.

För detta kloka uttalande av Kjell-Albin Abrahamson har Ring P1 nu fällts av Granskningsnämnden. Det har liknats vid Cecilia Uddéns ställningstagande för John Kerry, men den jämförelsen skulle vara rimlig endast om han hade följt upp det så här:
"Och jag tycker heller inte att svenska medier har något som helst krav på sig på opartiskhet när det gäller synen på monarki eller republik. Vi har ju ingen anledning att vara opartiska och redovisa båda ståndpunkter..."

12:55 - THE MUBARAK SHOW:
In his excellent titled New York Times article "Egypt Holds a Multiple-Choice Vote, but the Answer Is Mubarak", Michael Slackman presents snapshots of the Egyptian presidential election:
"At many polling stations, Mubarak supporters literally stood over voters as they cast their ballots. Murad Mahmoud Abdullah videotaped people in his polling station, and the message of intimidation was clear. Khalid Ahmed Muhammad stood beside voters chanting, ´Hosni! Hosni!´ in a threatening manner.
And in at least one polling station, the only person who appeared to be in charge was a governing party representative who wore a Mubarak button as he told people where to go to vote."
But relative to Egypt´s and the region´s history, there is no doubt that this election is a step forward. With low expectations, it´s easy to be positively surprised:
"Even Mr. Mubarak´s most outspoken critics - members of the movement called Kifaya, or Enough - were taken aback when they crowded into the symbolic center of the city and were allowed to chant antigovernment slogans for hours without being thrashed or chased off by the police.
´We are kind of shocked they didn´t beat us,´ said Ahmad Salah, a Kifaya member who was one of several hundred protesters blocking traffic in Tahrir Square."

The pictures are taken by two different photographers and came from two different services, who might have different styles and policies on capitons. And most important, the first photographer saw the man looting a grocery store, whereas the second photographer saw the young people picking up items floating in the water.

This has made the headlines in the US for a while, but I haven´t seen it until now (Thanks Thomas). Two pictures from Yahoo News, both portraying young people wading through water after the hurricane in New Orleans. But the captions are not at all similar:
Picture 1: "A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005."
Picture 2: "Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina came through the area in New Orleans, Louisiana."
What makes the difference between "looting" and "finding"? The only difference is that the first picture portray a young black man, the second two young white people.

In New York Times, John Tierny explains how the federal government took over the business of insuring against floods in the 1960s, and since then people have built seaside homes in flood-prone areas, that wouldn´t have been built otherwise.
10:07 - PERSSON´S MYTHS ABOUT THE US:
At the televised political debate this Sunday, prime minister Göran Persson said that the opposition wanted an "American model" where the poor have to have two jobs to get by. In an article in Svenska Dagbladet today, I look closer at who those five percent who have more than one job are. And they are not the ones Persson suggests.
The statistics show that the higher education someone has, the bigger is the chance that he has two jobs. PhDs are most overrepresented among those with two jobs, and high school dropouts are most underrepresented. In other words, the typical person with two jobs in the US is an academic or accountant who have a job on the side to earn extra income.

14:12 - MORE ON HURRICANES II:
Of course, this does not mean that we know that hurricanes do not get worse because of a change of climate, we don´t. But it means that we don´t see that happening, despite what so many take for granted. That however, does not mean that there are no environmental reason why the consecuences were so catastrophic. As The Economist writes:
"In the middle of the last century, engineers succeeded in re-plumbing the great Mississippi river to make shipping easier and to control floods.
Alas, those same measures also hastened erosion of the coastal marshes that used to buffer New Orleans, leaving the city needlessly exposed. Most of the metropolitan area lies below sea level on drained swamp land. Levees normally hold back the Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain, but those were not designed to handle the waters that would come with such a powerful hurricane.
America´s Geological Survey has estimated that if nothing is done by 2050, Louisiana will lose another 700 square miles of coastal wetlands. "

Some readers have pointed out that we shouldn´t compare four years (2000-2004) to entire decades. But the point is that these four years do not deviate significantly from the long-term trend. Even if we multiply the numbers by two and a half to make it comparable to decades, we have three decades in the last 70 years with more major hurricanes. The only reason why it is up from the last decades is that we have seen a downward trend since the 1950s, something we rarely hear about on the news.

När Agenda frågar ut Reinfeldt inleds det med en inskickad fråga från "Kenta Hansson, Märsta" om varför moderaterna vill piska arbetare. Det låter lite för bra och fokligt för att vara sant. Och kanske är det så. När jag kollar på Hitta.se finns det ingen Kenta Hansson och inte ens någon Kent Hansson i Märsta. Han kanske har hemligt nummer, vad vet jag. Men nog låter det som att socialdemokraternas gamla Fejkad insändar-division har gnuggat geniknölarna igen på jakt efter festliga och oklanderliga arbetarnamn?

21:11 - PARTILEDARDEBATTEN:
Sällan har väl vänsterkartellen varit så defensiv och desperat i en partiledardebatt. Det syntes att alla tre partiledarna tyckte att det var jobbigt att associeras med de båda andra. När Persson inte vände ryggen till, eller klickade högljutt med sin kulspetspenna, såg det ut som om han hade ätit en oväntat stor citron.
När Renfieldt debatterade mot Persson senast tyckte jag att Persson vann, men när vänstern nu höjer volymen och retoriken ett snäpp utan att ha någon täckning blir Reinfeldts lugna, metodiska stil fullkomligt oslagbar.
Och här är två citat som jag kommer att ha roligt åt under lång tid framöver:

18:25 - NO, HURRICANES ARE NOT WORSE TODAY:
It is obvious that relief- and security efforts after the hurricane Katrina have not worked as American citizens had reason to expect. I think that a lot of the criticism against the authorities is correct, and I am looking forward to an investigation to look at for example the role of Bush and the federal government.
But when the critics blame American environmental policies - especially not signing the Kyoto agreement - for the fact that there was a hurricane at all, they cross the line from legitimate criticism to fantasies.
Figures from the National Hurricane Center (thanks Stefan) show that the number of hurriances has not increased in the US in the last decades, and neither has the severity of hurricanes:

10:51 - SO WHAT IF US RESOURCES ARE SPREAD THIN?:
As has been pointed out, there is something sickening about those Europeans who almost gloat about the tragedy caused by the hurricane Katrina in Southern USA - those who seem to express satisfaction when they say that the US is so powerful, and yet it can´t even protect its own citizens...
But at the same time a government´s primary task is to protect its own citizens from horror and crime. It´s too early to tell and I am definitely not an expert, but it´s not impossible that the lack of security and relief in New Orleans is partly a consequence of American resources spread too thin throughtout the world, particularly the National Guard.
But if this is true, what does it say about the world? After all, who should deal with a war on the Balkans, a nuclear threat in North Korea, or a civil war in Africa? Well, Europeans, Asians and Africans, of course. As long as we don´t, and always call on the American world police to come save us, perhaps we should think again before we say that the Americans have themselves to blame when they are everywhere but home.

Should Kansas schools really give as much time to the (crypto-creationist) theory of intelligent design as they do to evolution? In that case, why don´t they also give equal time to an alternative theory of intelligent design? (Thanks Anders)
